The HLD-X0 is single-side play, the HLD-X9 has an auto-flip mechanism. Both the HLD-X0 and the HLD-X9 use a higher frequency, narrower-beam, visible laser diode instead of the IR (Infra Red) diode in most (all?) other players. The HLD-X0 mass is 36 kg (79 lbs) and the HLD-X9 is 17 kg (38 lbs), and the HLD-X0 is a bit higher than the HLD-X9 (which is about an inch higher than the CLD-99). One major mechanical difference is the HLD-X0 uses a linear motor for its laser pickup whereas the HLD-X9 use a conventional one. Note that both the HLD-X0 and the HLD-X9 play ONLY 12" (30cm) and 8" (20cm) MUSE HiVision and "standard" NTSC laserdiscs. You'll need something else to play CDs; conversely, the hub clamp mechanism of the HLD series is optimized for LD-only and is not the compromise LD/CD clamp in most other players. And, finally, from Ivar (who has the service manuals): The HLD-X9 is a two years younger design, so it has a better Y/C separation filter. In other words it ( X9 ) as a slight advantage when playing NTSC discs. MUSE discs is probably best using the HLD-X0. Thad
